Living in Hilongos, Indoor and Outdoor Snapshots

Hilongos, Leyte – This small town along with my grandfather’s house (my mother’s father) is home to a lot of memories of me as a kid. During my childhood days when I was still closer to our hometown, me and my family would usually come here during long breaks, such as for summer vacation, Holy week and Christmas celebrations.

Now, after a span of about two decades, I could say nothing much has changed. Well, there have been changes of course but nothing really drastic. As far as I can remember, how it felt like back in the day, is still how it feels like today to some extent.

Life in the slow lane

Time seems to tick away much more slowly here. Compared to my life in the city, days here start early, and end early as well. I’m really not a morning person so I consider 8am -9pm as early during vacation days in the province.

The house

Dating back to the World War 2 days more than 50 years ago, my grandfather’s house is still standing tall and firm up to this day, with no major renovations yet.

The entrance

These are the kinds of doors with no padlocks. Rather there is just a big, long, and thick wooden pole wedged horizontally from the inside.

The windows

Classic wooden sliding doors, which use wooden sticks as locks

The Walls

It’s all wood, just wood, and of course some nails

Going to bed

There is no bed. Just the floor.

As I’ve said, there is no bed, just the floor.

Old age

Time and the elements has shown its effects on the house, but nonetheless, the house itself lives on

After the Rain

One of the best things I’ve ever done here was playing, running, and splashing in the rain

The gate

I’ve always felt safe here, even with just chains on the gate

Sticks and Matches

Who needs an electric or gas stove, when we have a fireplace in the dirty kitchen?

Pot-pot

Look it’s a pedicab, no it’s a sidecar, no it’s… Pot-pot. It’s a funny name that originated from the sound of its rubber, air-filled honk.

Balloon man

Back in the day, these balloons were just the plain, old, simple, round ones. I guess kids nowadays want more than just that.
